Regarding the State Senate and Assembly races: During the 2023 Nevada Legislature, a number of state legislative Democrats joined all Republicans and voted to repeal daily room cleaning. SB441 was signed into law by Governor Lombardo and hurt guest room attendants and our jobs.

The Culinary Union has chosen to *not* endorse politicians in the 2024 Primary who previously had an endorsement, but who disappointedly voted in favor of passing SB441. Candidates, who are no longer endorsed, are crossed out in red on the 2024 Primary Endorsement Guide. Culinary Union will re-evaluate all endorsements ahead of the November general election.

Culinary Union concludes historic 48-hour strike of Virgin Las Vegas -
 
For the first time in over 22 years, the Culinary and Bartenders Unions led 700+ hospitality workers in a strike as they continue to push for a new 5-year union contract at Virgin Las Vegas. A planned 48-hour strike at Virgin Las Vegas began May 10th at 5:00am and has now ended.
 
With this 48-hour strike, Virgin Las Vegas workers sent a strong message that this company needs to do the right thing for their employees and our community.
 
Negotiations are Tuesday, May 14th and so the Culinary Union calls on Virgin Las Vegas to stop treating their workers as second-class, respect them, and agree that they are worth more than zero. Every casino on the Las Vegas Strip and Downtown Las Vegas has already settled a fair contract and it’s time for Virgin Las Vegas to do the right thing.

Some people showed up to show their solidarity with the union, including Geoconda Hughes, a Democratic candidate for state Senate District 3, which covers an area east and north of the Strip.

Hughes, the daughter of a former Culinary Union secretary-treasurer, said, “I feel like without this union, our family would not be where we are. This is not just about a picket line, it’s about people’s lives.”
 
 
 
Giovanni Guerrero wasn’t even born 22 years ago when Culinary Workers Union Local 226 last called a strike by its workforce at a Las Vegas resort.

But early Friday morning, Guerrero, 18, found himself on the picket line in front of Virgin Hotels Las Vegas just seven months after starting his first real full-time job since graduating from Valley High School.

A kitchen steward at the off-Strip resort, Guerrero was one of 700 non-gaming workers from the Culinary and affiliated Bartenders Union Local 165 participating in a 48-hour strike to call attention to the stalled contract negotiations with JC Hospitality, the owner-operators of the Virgin.
 
Hundreds of Culinary Local 226 members — which represents about 700 servers, stewards, housekeepers and others — at Virgin Hotels walked off the job Friday to pressure the resort-casino into making a deal that accounts for inflation and other higher labor costs like peers on the Strip and throughout the region.

About 50 union picketers, including Nevada Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar, hollered through megaphones and encouraged people not to cross the picket line on Saturday afternoon. Rep. Steven Horsford, D-Las Vegas, also walked the picket line Friday.
 
Nevada’s largest labor union concluded a 48-hour strike Sunday meant to pressure Virgin Hotels Las Vegas to agree to a five-year contract on wages and benefits.

More than 700 workers with Culinary Union Local 226 walked off the job at the 1,500-room hotel-casino near the Las Vegas Strip on Friday morning and ended the strike Sunday morning. Contract talks are set to resume on Tuesday.

Guest room attendants, cocktail and food servers, porters, bellmen, cooks, bartenders, and laundry and kitchen workers were among those walking the picket line in front of Virgin Hotels, formerly the Hard Rock Las Vegas.

Ted Pappageorge, secretary-treasurer for the union, said workers hoped the 48-hour strike would help expedite a new agreement.
 
For the first time in 22 years, Culinary Union called for a 48-hour strike at Virgin Las Vegas that began Friday, May 10th at 5:00am as hundreds of workers walked off the job and onto the 24/7 picket line. The planned 48-hour strike will end on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 12th at 4:59am.

“After 48-hours of striking, I’m very proud of everyone who showed up. All of my co-workers out on the picket line showed our worth while the company was in there trying to run the casino bare bones,” said Alain Lopez, a food server at Virgin Las Vegas and Culinary Union member for 3 years. “We all have a story and we are fighting for the same thing - a better future and that’s what I’m doing. I work with a lot of folks who remind me of my family back home - housekeepers, dishwashers, bartenders, and I’m fighting for everyone, not just myself. Going on strike was scary at first, but we have to fight for what we want and show the company that we are not joking.”

The strike, involving over 700 hospitality workers, marks a historic first for this property as it has never been subject to a Culinary and Bartenders Union strike. Main table negotiations with Virgin Las Vegas are currently scheduled for Tuesday, May 14th.
 
24/7 picket lines around the property will be in place daily Friday at 5:00am - Sunday at 4:59am. During a strike, the Culinary Union urges the community and customers to support workers and to *not* patronize or cross picketing happening on strike lines.
